The Fool on the Hill Grenache exemplifies Thistledown's unwavering commitment to the path less traveled, proving that, if the desired outcomes are exceptional, they embrace challenges without hesitation. Hailing from a minuscule vineyard nestled in the Eden Valley, these resilient vines, although beset by adversity, yield fruit of astonishing quality, brimming with concentrated, intense flavors. Thistledown's fearless pursuit of this venture, even in the face of daunting conditions, has unquestionably reaped substantial rewards, delivering a wine that retains the hallmark bright Thistledown aromatics while introducing an enticing layer of texture, spice, and warmth that sets it apart from its McLaren Vale counterparts.
One of the highest Grenache vineyards in South Australia at 550m, the meagre soils are strewn with pink quartz and ironstone. 3 clonal selections of Grenache have been planted in bush-vine form with only a little water to establish them. Still young by our standards, these small vines yield fruit with high intensity.
The fruit was hand-picked early in the morning before swift transport to the winery where we retained 20% whole bunches. A gentle ferment in concrete egg was followed by pressing to 500 litre 2nd and 3rd year French oak.
