The Legacy of Eden Valley
In the early settlement of South Australia in 1858, the Polhner family established a sprawling 4,000-acre property in the foothills of the Barossa. For nearly 150 years, this land remained under their stewardship until it caught the attention of Bob McLean, an iconic figure in the Australian wine industry. In 1997, the property changed hands, marking the beginning of a new chapter for this historic estate.
A Fruitful Encounter
In 2014, Joel Mattschoss, a renowned Barossa grape grower, serendipitously acquired premium fruit from the esteemed Eden Valley property. Joel, fueled by a shared passion for exceptional terroirs and wines, approached Pierre-Henri Morel, a Frenchman who had recently arrived from the Northern Rhone region. Upon tasting the fruit, Pierre-Henri recognized the echoes of his home region's most captivating and intricate flavours. A joint decision was made to treat the 2014 fruit with the utmost care, subjecting it to meticulous hand picking and hand destemming processes before embarking on a separate crush and fermentation.
Avenue to Gold and the Passing of a Legend
In 2016, Love Over Gold expanded its presence on the property by creating Avenue to Gold, a wine crafted from the vines of a younger block on the estate. Tragically, shortly thereafter, Bob McLean, a close friend to Joel and Pierre, passed away. As custodians of the unique property, an agreement was forged between Joel, Pierre, and their friends Michael Twelftree and Tim Hower to carry on Bob's legacy.
The Birth of Love Over Gold Estate
Thus, Love Over Gold Estate was born—a name derived from the vineyards that were lovingly planted over the historic goldfields of Eden Valley. Each bottle of Barr Eden wines from this remarkable estate tells a story of passion, heritage, and a deep respect for the land.
A New Chapter Unfolds
After an arduous journey of 1,700 days from the initial harvest, the first Barr Eden wine was finally released in October 2018. This momentous occasion marked the beginning of a new chapter in the unique narrative crafted by the new custodians. With each sip, wine enthusiasts embark on a sensory exploration of the history and terroir that define Barr Eden wines.
