In the 1950s, Dr. Tom Cullity, a highly intelligent and respected Cardiologist from Western Australia, embarked on a mission to create fine wines in his homeland. During his travels in Britain, while working at the National Heart Hospital, he discovered the exceptional table wines of Europe, igniting a passion within him.
Upon returning to Australia, Tom was determined to find the perfect plot of land to fulfil his winemaking ambitions. Drawing inspiration from the research of Professor Harold Olmo (1955) and Dr. John Gladstones (1965), he sought out a specific terroir—a place with "red gravel in redgum country, with clay about 18 inches below the surface."
After an obsessive search, Tom finally discovered a small piece of land that would become the Vasse Felix Home Vineyard. Located near the Wilyabrup Brook, he planted 8 hectares of vines, including what is now known as the Houghton clone Cabernet Sauvignon—the cornerstone of Margaret River's finest Cabernets.
Juggling a demanding career and a large family, Tom dedicated most of his spare time to nurturing his young vine plantings. He faced the challenge of navigating long and arduous drives from Perth to Margaret River on gravel roads. At the vineyard site, a mere 4km from the ocean, he established rudimentary winemaking facilities in a small shed. This humble structure also served as his sleeping quarters, made up of recycled medical contraptions.
Despite facing skepticism and being labelled as eccentric by the locals, Tom remained undeterred in his pursuit of winemaking excellence. His unconventional approach and intellectual prowess, along with a brief foray into falconry, helped him overcome the various obstacles he encountered.
Thanks to Tom's unwavering persistence and dedication, Margaret River's first commercial wines were successfully created. He is remembered as a pioneer who played a crucial role in establishing the renowned Margaret River Wine Region.
