At Ornellaia, everything done in the vineyard, cellar, and daily running of the estate is a matter of sensibility. The unspoken bond between simplicity and constant improvement is formed by many tiny details.
An intimate knowledge and utmost care for the vines form the bedrock of Ornellaia's approach to the estate's terroir. The vineyard comprises many small parcels, each receiving individualized care to express their unique character. Parts of the Ornellaia estate were once covered by the Mediterranean Sea, resulting in diverse soils including sand, marl, marine fossils, clay, and limestone pebbles.
The soil at Ornellaia is of marine, alluvial, and volcanic origin. The vineyards are divided into dozens of parcels, each with its own unique identity and expression. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are the main varieties planted on the estate, followed by Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. White wines are made from grapes such as Sauvignon Blanc, Petit Manseng, Viognier, Verdicchio, and Vermentino. The vineyards are primarily southwest facing, capturing the last rays of sunshine over the sea.
Discovering the land's winemaking potential was the starting point, but without vision and sheer determination, there would be no Ornellaia. Ornellaia respects and values nature, striving to be sustainable and responsible. Sustainability is not just a commitment but a way of life that looks to the future, ensuring development that lasts over time. It is a duty to society, the local area, and the people who live and work here.
Ornellaia obtained the "Sustainable Organization" certification in compliance with the SODP Equalitas standard in 2021. Sustainable viticulture is an integral part of their plans, harmonizing with the longevity of the local economy, quality production, and appreciation of the Bolgheri area's history, culture, and landscape. Ornellaia strives to improve the conditions for the local community, supports social activities beyond the estate's boundaries, and aims to have the least possible impact on the environment.
In 2021, Ornellaia received certification and compiled its first Sustainability Report. This document lays the foundations for reflecting on the journey taken, the progress made, and the future challenges in their ongoing commitment to sustainability.
