Each Love Over Gold Shiraz batch is destemmed by hand, berry by berry and fermented slowly over weeks. Ten percent whole-bunch was included in the ferment with only perfect berries left on the rachis. The destemmed fruit was transferred into a small open topped fermenter. Gentle pigeage was performed twice daily with the natural ferment progressing at a cool 24 degrees. Once ferment was complete and after 24 days, free run was drained to a 2-year-old extra tight-grained French puncheon.
2018 is an excellent Eden Valley vintage (Henschke considered it the standout of the decade). After good winter rains, ideal spring conditions led to quick and healthy canopy growth and the setting of plentiful bunches. A warm and dry summer, with some short bursts of more extreme heat guaranteed a superb ripening season.
Love Over Gold Shiraz comes from a 95-year-old vineyard, the old vines able to withstand heat spikes, as well as its elevation which brings cooler night temperatures.
Strictly limited to 600 (impressively packaged) bottles, the wine's special provenance is a rare gem of the Eden Valley. The estate, which sits atop the ancient goldfields of the Eden and along the 'Barr-line' of the Barossa and Eden valleys, includes the 95-year-old vines that go into the Love Over Gold Shiraz. The vineyard is tended with sustainable philosophies, the traditional use of cover crops, straw mulch, minimal use of machinery and such. The guiding principle is to achieve very low yields and fruit intensity. The 2018 vintage is set to be an outstanding release.
