Kurt Heppell, Sommelier at The Reserve Cellar

As the Sommelier at The Reserve Cellar and Emporium Hotels, Kurt’s dedication to the craft of wine curation has made him an essential part of the brand's commitment to excellence. With an impressive background and a refined palate, Kurt plays a pivotal role in ensuring that every wine selection at The Reserve Cellar meets the highest standards of quality and sophistication.

Kurt’s journey into the world of wine began with a fascination that quickly evolved into a lifelong passion. Originally from Tamworth, Kurt has lived in some of the most vibrant cities around the globe, including Sydney, Melbourne, the Gold Coast, Paris, and now Brisbane. His love for wine first blossomed while working in 5-star hotels during the 2000 Sydney Olympics. From there, Kurt's curiosity and drive for knowledge propelled him to travel the world, visiting renowned wine regions and vineyards to deepen his understanding of the craft.

With prestigious qualifications such as the WSET Level 3 Award in Wines and the WSET Level 1 Award in Sake, both completed with distinctions, Kurt’s thirst for learning is never-ending. One of his most recent and cherished experiences was picking grapes for Maison AIX in Provence for their 2023 vintage—a magical day that speaks to his hands-on approach to the world of wine.

In a recent Q&A, Kurt shared some of his favourite wine experiences and insights:

Describe your perfect wine and food pairing?

“Oysters with a mignonette sauce and a Vintage Blanc de Blanc Champagne by a picturesque waterway. The crispness of the Champagne beautifully complements the briny freshness of the oysters.”

What’s your go-to wine for a casual night in?

“Depending on the time of year or my mood, I’ll reach for either a Rosé, Chablis, or Grenache. Each of these brings a unique charm and versatility to the table.”

What is a wine variety you tell all your friends about?

“Nebbiolo. My trip to the Piedmont region in Italy was a game-changer. Spending time with my dear friend Luisa Rocca from Bruno Rocca in Alba and experiencing the region firsthand has given me a deep love for Nebbiolo. It’s a wine I recommend to anyone who appreciates complexity and elegance.”

If you could create your own wine label, what would it be called and why?

“Isaac Estate — Isaac is my confirmation name, chosen when I was in Year 6. The name means ‘laughter,’ which to me now symbolizes the joy that great wine can bring. It carries personal significance, and I believe it would reflect the tradition, timeless elegance, and the light-hearted spirit of the wines I love. Like a fine wine shared with friends, it’s about celebrating life’s joyful moments.”

If you could share a glass of wine with one person throughout history, who would it be and why?

“Princess Diana. I feel we would connect over our shared love of life and experiences. I can imagine us laughing and dancing the night away—it would be a truly unforgettable moment.”
