Yarra Yering Dry Red No. 2 needs no introduction. The illustrious label's Rhone blend (Shiraz 95%, Mataro 3%, Viognier 1%, Marsanne 1%) sits comfortably among this country's most iconic bottlings. The first vines were put in the ground at the Yarra Yering site by Doctor Bailey Carrodus in 1969 at the base of the Warramate Hills after a thorough search to find the perfect place for growing 'noble' French varieties. Fifty years later, the wines are renowned at home and Internationally. Sarah Crowe, 2017 James Halliday Winemaker of the Year, is now in charge of winemaking and keeps the vineyard's early traditions alive with vintage after vintage of intensely flavoured, harmonious and age-worthy wines. The 2018 release of the Dry Red no. 2 is, without a doubt, a collector's item. A wine that will reward lengthy cellaring and continue to charm and disarm for decades to come.
Slurpy, rich and fresh red of jolly, loose-knit and spice-laden, come hither fruit character. Red plums, clove and cinnamon, dark chocolate liquorice, faint game meat and dried herbs. Lots going on here in its meaty, fleshy feel. The lush slosh of flavour feels biggish and bold from front to mid-palate, sweetish in that core, then finishes quite quickly to a powdery-tannin finish—viognier in the driving seat.
