Description

Renowned and respected as one of the finest producers in Burgundy, Bouchard Père et Fils has truly become an institution, known for the exceptional quality of their wines and the diversity of its many vineyards.

Founded in 1731, Bouchard Père et Fils has built up an estate of 130ha and, collectively, is the largest owner of Grand Crus (12ha) and Premier Crus (74ha) across the Côte d’Or. Bouchard Père et Fils represents almost one hundred ‘climats’ or uniquely diverse vineyards, including prestigious monopoles such as ‘Beaune Grèves Vigne de l’Enfant Jésus’ and ‘Chevalier-Montrachet La Cabotte’.

Le Montrachet has its origins in the 13th century. The Cistercian monks were donated a few vineyards on " le Mont Chauve " or " Mont Rachaz" between Puligny and Chassagne. Over the centuries, Le Montrachet was nicknamed the "Vigne Blanche du Seigneur" or "Roi des Rois". It is today considered to be the greatest of all dry white wines in the world. On extremely barren land, it is the very proof that the greatest wines often come from the most extreme growing conditions. In 1838, Bouchard Père & Fils acquired 89 "ares" of this unique vineyard.

Clear fresh lemon and lime colour. The nose is magisterial. There is a little light coconut even though only 20% new wood is used. Very distinguished though, and restrained. So smooth throughout the palate with excellent lifted citrus fruit acidity, waves of white fruit flavour course across the palate, and a little essence of pear, but no feeling of undue heat.

Aromas of white flowers, fresh peach, toasted bread, mandarin oil, and pastry cream introduce Bouchard's 2019 Montrachet Grand Cru, a full-bodied, layered, and multidimensional wine that's deep and concentrated, with racy acids, terrific mid-palate amplitude, and a long, saline finish. Broad-shouldered and powerful without being at all overbearing, it's an exemplary rendition of this celebrated site.

The 2019 Montrachet Grand Cru has a complex bouquet of crushed chalk, Mirabelle, apricot, and light vanilla pod aromas, plus just a touch of white chocolate in the background. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, quite powerful, and very well defined. Orange zest, mandarin, and lemon thyme notes feature a very long finish that fans out extremely well. Superb.
