by Farr Sangreal Pinot Noir 2020
The Sangreal vineyard, planted in 1994, stands as our most venerable parcel of land. Nestled on a north-facing slope, it boasts a distinctive soil composition, with bluestone and limestone forming its bedrock, adorned by the surface presence of red ironstone. A unique distinction from our other vineyards, which predominantly feature black volcanic soil with a generous limestone veneer. The vine rows are meticulously aligned from north to south, basking in the full spectrum of sunlight throughout the day, resulting in wines that exude a captivating perfume and elegance. As a testament to its exceptional character, Sangreal is invariably the first vineyard we harvest. The Sangreal clone, derived from the 114 and 115 clones, has undergone a fascinating evolution over time, now thriving in its own microclimate.
Our commitment to preserving the wine's natural essence and aromatic bouquet is reflected in our unfined and unfiltered winemaking process. Among the trio of single-vineyard pinots, Sangreal reigns supreme as the epitome of seamlessness and fragrant refinement.
Each year the same descriptive notes come to mind for this wine: seductive, perfumed, seamless balance, and moreish. It is a site that wavers very little in more difficult vintages and excels in the great ones—this is the backbone of By Farr wines. The alluring characters of this vineyard, combined with red fruits, a whole bunch, acidity, and oak, have produced a beautifully interwoven expression of site and vintage. That’s what it’s all about.
