Leading prestigious Burgundy magazine Bourgogne Aujourdi announced Chateau de Meursault & Chateau de Marsannay as joint winners of producer of the year 2021.
Marsannay rouge comes from a blend of several parcels situated halfway up the slope, such as Clos du Roy, Au Champ Salomon, Les Longeroies, or Les Vignes Marie. Their style resembles that of their neighbouring appellations Fixin and Gevrey-Chambertin. The Marsannay reds have intense colouration and a bouquet that smoothly blends red fruits (morello cherry, strawberry) and black (blackcurrant, blueberry). In the mouth, the attack is powerful and generous shading into a long and meaty finish.
A more subtly wooded nose slowly reveals its aromas of ripe black pinot fruit, earth, and discreet spice wisps. There is very good volume to the appealingly textured middle-weight flavours that terminate in a rustic, tangy, and slightly warm finish. This plump effort is attractive in its fashion, but the balance isn't quite dialled in.
