Hailing from the prestigious Sandown property located in Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale where the sister wine, Sandown Cabernet Sauvignon originates. The Sandown Syrah is a new addition in 2022 to the Clarendon Hills portfolio. The Syrah patch was planted in the mid-1940s and yields a microscopic 250-300 dozen per annum. The Sandown Syrah patch is west-facing and features significant ironstone content. The site yields a signature incense-like spice throughout the fruit and makes for a highly exotic expression of Blewitt Springs Syrah. Cola, sarsaparilla, incense, blackcurrant, blueberry, black olive, Italian leather, Sandalwood, and roasted meat are all on display with recessed power woven throughout this highly perfumed and multi-layered, seamless example.
This is from 90-year-old vines, growing on clay and ironstone, and marks a new addition to the range of Clarendon Hills Syrah wines. The nose is intensely perfumed with aromas of sandalwood and clove with forest wood and blueberry, as well as very rich plum and sarsaparilla. The palate has density and drives with impressive, energetic ripe dark plums on offer and a succulent, deep-set palate that carries such intense and ripe blueberry, blackberry, and dark plum. The freshness and richness combined here are so impressive. Drinking well now, better after 2023.
