Journeying upstream along the Serein River, past the revered slopes of the grands crus, emerges Fourchaume, the northernmost premier cru of the appellation. Revered as a paragon of excellence, it lends its name to neighboring premier crus such as Vaupulent, Côte de Fontenay, Vaulorent, and L’homme mort. A fascinating coincidence, as the etymology of Fourchaume traces back to a poetic distortion of "lime kiln" or "men's fork," hinting at a historical intrigue akin to the gallows. Within the venerable Laroche estate, 2.44 hectares of weathered vines, aged 70 years, bask in southwestern exposure, shielded from the north wind's chill.
