Sebastien Cathiards wines are incredibly harmonious, softly textured, and very fine. Since taking over in 2011 Sebastien has been listening carefully to those few who get the privilege to taste with him and he has gradually reduced the percentage of new oak used for aging. In a good vintage there are around 50 barrels produced in total across all appellations. His Vosne-Romanées in particular are now regarded among the best of the village. All wines offered here are from fully mature vineyards that have yielded fruit with wonderful natural intensity and balance. These wines represent artisan wine-making at its very best.
Sébastian Cathiard opined that "the 2020 vintage was hot and dry but not as extreme as say 2018. In contrast to the reports I have heard about extremely low yields, we actually had good yields, which is to say around 45 hl/ha in the Côte de Nuits and around 35 hl/ha in the Hautes Côtes. The fruit was basically spotless with no real sorting required. Because of the very thick skins, I did a soft but relatively long vinification that lasted about 25 days. As to the wines, they're clearly ripe but quite fresh and in particular, I really like the textures and the overall sense of balance.
A gorgeous nose that is both airy and cool speaks of black pinot fruit, anise, jasmine tea, and sandalwood. There is excellent richness to the concentrated and palate-drenching flavours that flash a bracing minerality on the youthfully austere, balanced, and beautifully complex finale. This is unusually powerful for Reignots while remaining refined. Excellent.
