Description

Domaine Bernard Dugat-Py is hailed as a luminous star in the Burgundy constellation, revered by connoisseurs as a bastion of authentic "vin de garde," wines that evolve and magnify in quality with the passage of time. Their commitment to the vineyard is nothing short of meticulous, as evidenced by their organic certification dating back to 2003. With approximately 7.5 hectares under their stewardship, primarily gracing the slopes of Gevrey-Chambertin, including the hallowed terroirs of four Grand Crus, as well as smaller holdings in Vosne-Romanée, Pommard, Chassagne-Montrachet, and Meursault, they have established an enological empire.

In the cellar, their winemaking philosophy is rooted in minimal intervention. Grapes are harvested judiciously, often at an earlier stage, stems intact, and judiciously aged in oak. The result is a portfolio of wines that resonate with the distinct character of their appellation and possess an innate ability to gracefully mature over time. Domaine Bernard Dugat-Py's wines are the epitome of Burgundian excellence, a timeless testament to the art of winemaking that continues to captivate enthusiasts and collectors alike.

The Dugat-Py family have nearly 1ha of Charmes-Chambertin, divided two-thirds to one between Charmes itself and Mazoyères. Picked early, this is a serious, textured, wild-herb-scented wine, beautifully crafted to combine structure with fruit weight, supported by acidity and adroitly handled new wood.

Review
I have already tasted the 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru three or four times since it was bottled, and it is an immensely appealing young wine that exemplifies the stylistic evolution that Loïc Dugat-Py has subtly enacted at this estate since taking the helm a few years ago. Soaring from the glass with an expressive bouquet of cherries, licorice and sweet coniferous forest floor, it’s full-bodied, ample and exquisitely velvety, with a deep and concentrated core, mouthwateringly succulent acids and a long, intense finish. More immediate and overtly charming than the Lavaux Saint-Jacques, anyone who wants to understand contemporary Dugat-Py could be forgiven for tasting a bottle young. Drink 2025-2060
