Dugat-Py Mazis Chambertin Grand Cru 2021
Domaine Bernard Dugat-Py is hailed as a luminous star in the Burgundy constellation, revered by connoisseurs as a bastion of authentic "vin de garde," wines that evolve and magnify in quality with the passage of time. Their commitment to the vineyard is nothing short of meticulous, as evidenced by their organic certification dating back to 2003. With approximately 7.5 hectares under their stewardship, primarily gracing the slopes of Gevrey-Chambertin, including the hallowed terroirs of four Grand Crus, as well as smaller holdings in Vosne-Romanée, Pommard, Chassagne-Montrachet, and Meursault, they have established an enological empire.
In the cellar, their winemaking philosophy is rooted in minimal intervention. Grapes are harvested judiciously, often at an earlier stage, stems intact, and judiciously aged in oak. The result is a portfolio of wines that resonate with the distinct character of their appellation and possess an innate ability to gracefully mature over time. Domaine Bernard Dugat-Py's wines are the epitome of Burgundian excellence, a timeless testament to the art of winemaking that continues to captivate enthusiasts and collectors alike.
The 2021 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from three parcels, the largest populated by 90-year-old vines and planted at high density. Raised in 75% new oak and 90% whole bunch, it has a stupendous, mineral-driven, intense bouquet of blackberry and blueberry fruit that delivers great clarity and panache. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, vibrant acidity, great intensity and a precise, sustained finish. It is very tightly coiled at present and as such, it will demand several years (at least) in bottle before it will even consider its drinking plateau.
A classic wine pairing for Pinot Noir is roast duck, as the wine's elegant red fruit and earthy notes beautifully complement the rich, tender meat.
