Description

Domaine Raveneau is arguably the greatest estate in Chablis. The Domaine produces limited quantities of wines from the village’s top vineyards. The Domaine’s holdings include 3 Grand Cru vineyards: Blanchot, Les Clos, and Valmur; and a selection of Premier Crus: Montée de Tonnerre, Les Vaillons, Butteaux, Chapelot, Mont-Mains, and Forêt. The Domaine’s creation dates back to 1948 when François Raveneau consolidated his holdings with his wife’s parcels. François Raveneau built the reputation of this estate thanks to his inimitable style and incredible consistency in quality.

This Valmur is made from 0.75 hectares of 40-year-old vines. the Climat of Valmur has a double personality, constantly juggling between remarkable freshness and distinctive sun-drenched quality. This duality, as well as strength and complexity, define its character. Sun-drenched, mineral, persistent, and austere (especially in the first years) — Valmur shows perfect balance, with an aging potential reaching 10 to 12 years.

On the south-facing side to the left of the valley. Pale primrose in colour, with quite a firm nose held back by a little touch of sulphur. Then there is a wealth of classic fruit on the palate. The wine does indeed show a graceful ripeness, but neither heat nor heaviness. The finish once again is notably persistent. Very fine. The longer in the glass, the purer and more electric it becomes.

A brooding if broad-ranging nose features notes of green fruit, white flowers, iodine, ocean breeze, and a touch of mineral reduction that is also trimmed in just enough wood to mention. The rich, powerful and very concentrated broad-shouldered flavours are pungently saline, indeed this is almost salty, while the focused and driving finish also delivers huge persistence. This almost painfully intense effort is also indisputably built to age and a wine that will also need a minimum of 10 years of cellaring to be approachable.
