Description

Nestled in the picturesque township of Healesville, Giant Steps emerges as a beacon of Yarra Valley's premium winemaking. Born from the visionary mind of Phil Sexton, and ignited by the original head winemaker Steve Flamsteed, this esteemed establishment has garnered global acclaim for its mastery in crafting the finest expressions of single vineyard Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

In a pivotal turn of events, 2021 welcomed the exceptional talents of Melanie Chester, as she assumed the role of head of winemaking and viticulture. This transition marks an exhilarating new chapter in the narrative of this distinguished producer.

The entire journey from vine to bottle within Giant Steps is a relentless pursuit of crafting wines that stand as exemplars on the world stage. Meticulous attention is paid to each facet of the process, from the nurturing of the vineyards to the moment the elixir graces the bottle. The essence of this endeavor is rooted in amplifying the Yarra Valley's strengths - Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Shiraz/Syrah, and Bordeaux-varietal blends - and artfully showcasing the distinct terroirs of the region's most illustrious vineyards.

Primavera: A Unique Expression within the Single Vineyard Pantheon

Amid the tapestry of Giant Steps' Single Vineyard series, Primavera stands as a delightful divergence. Cradled within the embrace of Upper Yarra's red clay, this vineyard flourishes in the warmth of select vintages. Lou Primavera, a dedicated guardian, tends to this undulating expanse with unwavering devotion. A symphony of florals and seduction emanate from this wine, arguably the most velvety and sensuous within the single vineyard lineup. Whether savored now or reserved for the cellar, the allure of Primavera captivates the senses, offering an experience that's nothing short of extraordinary.

From Lou Primavera's 2001-planted vineyard at Woori Yallock; 25% whole bunches on the clone 115 component, while clones MV6 and G were destemmed. Matured in French barriques (25% new). Wonderfully perfumed and vibrant with its aromas of cranberries, wild strawberries, a little Sichuan pepper, fresh citrus oil and musk roses at dusk. A wine of exquisite finesse and excellent depth, the tannins are very fine and long, as is the finish. This will provide much enjoyment over the next decade or so.

Medium-deep red-purple, glowing bright colour; bright red and dark cherry aromas too. Reserved nose. Some oak spice. The palate is firmer and more assertive, with abundant tannins and impressive structure. At this stage it would benefit from serving with protein-rich food. Elegant wine that will surely build detail as it ages.

A medium-bodied wine with a bright red colour, aromas of red cherries, strawberries, and raspberries with hints of blood orange, spice, and earth, the palate is juicy and refreshing, with flavours of red fruits, spice, and minerality leading to a long and lingering finish.
