The Rosso family has had a presence in the Serra Lunga d'Alba area in northern Italy for over 100 years. There must be something special and magical about this area for this family to have been making wines here for more than a century. According to Davide Rosso the latest generation of the family now running the winery, the magic of this place lies in the soil, which is completely white and chalky, and gives the wine unique qualities that allow it to cope with the long time it spends in barrels (between 18 and 36 months of aging).
This is true for Giovanni Rosso Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba, a Barolo made by the Giovanni Rosso winery from vineyards in the Italian municipality of Serra Lunga d'Alba. This town is one of the 11 protected under the D.O.C.G. Barolo and part of the area where this world-famous wine is produced.
This remarkable Serralunga d'Alba Barolo stands as a true emblem of the entire commune. Crafted from a harmonious blend of grapes sourced from seven distinct vineyards, including renowned names like Broglio, Cerretta, and Baudana, this wine is a testament to the traditional winemaking techniques employed: an extended maceration in cement and three years of maturation in Slovenian botti grande barrels.
In the 2019 vintage, we witness a return to a vertical profile, marked by an exquisitely high-toned perfume. The palate delights with a delightful interplay of flavors, showcasing the crunchiness of cranberries, the vibrant zest of blood orange, and the delicate essence of dried rose petals. It's the ancient white soils of Serralunga that bestow this wine with its distinctive tannic character and profound depth. The conclusion is resolutely mineral-driven, possessing an appealing tautness, and above all, an unmistakable Serralunga identity.
