Alf Vesey, the esteemed great-grandfather of winemaker Chris "Hatch" Hatcher, held the distinguished title of Master Winemaker at Penfolds for an impressive 47 years. He imparted his knowledge to luminaries such as Max Schubert, the visionary behind Grange, shaping the very essence of winemaking and blending.
Nestled in the acclaimed McLaren Vale, renowned for its Shiraz, VESEY embodies the essence of this terroir with its luscious blueberry notes and a palate brimming with opulence.
The 2022 vintage in McLaren Vale yielded Shiraz fruit of exceptional depth and richness. Crafted with care, the fruit for HATCH Vesey Shiraz underwent fermentation on skins in small open-top fermenters, receiving gentle plunging and irrigation over 5-10 days. The result is a wine of commanding power, richness, and plushness, characterized by vibrancy and purity. On the palate, it unfurls with plushness, opulence, and a velvety texture.
While delightful to savour now, HATCH Shiraz promises even greater rewards with medium to long-term cellaring. Pair its splendor with a range of rich meat dishes—from succulent beef, pork, and lamb to barbecued meats, ragouts, and spicy fare.
Alf Vesey was my great-grandfather and the Master Winemaker at Penfolds for 47 years. He mentored Max Schubert the creator of Grange on the art of winemaking and blending. McLaren Vale is one of Australia’s best regions for Shiraz and VESEY has rich blueberry fruits and an opulent flavoursome palate.
