We're excited to announce that Wine & Spirits Magazine has recognized Hirsch Vineyards as one of the Top 100 Wineries of the Year once again. As one of the most renowned wineries in the industry, Hirsch Vineyards has produced many exceptional wines, including the Hirsch Block 8 Estate Pinot Noir Magnum 1.5L 2016.
This particular wine is a rare find in Australia, as only a limited amount of Hirsch's wine is imported. The Hirsch Vineyards estate was founded back in 1980 by David Hirsch, a pioneer farmer and future winemaker, and is located in a breathtaking setting overlooking the Pacific Ocean at the northern tip of Sonoma County. Their vineyard boasts the oldest premium Pinot Noir vines on the true Sonoma Coast.
The Hirsch Block 8 Estate Pinot Noir Magnum 1.5L 2016 is a special single vineyard wine from their Grand Cru site, which is located five miles back from the Pacific up a dirt road. The wine has a finely poised taste, with abundant wild herbs and spices, and flavours of cranberry and cherry. This wine is perfect for collectors, as it is very cellar-worthy and has a linear taste that is comparable to Chambolle rather than Central Otago.
It's also worth noting that the wine comes in a magnum bottle, which is a size that is equivalent to two standard wine bottles. This larger size allows for a slower aging process, resulting in a more complex and nuanced flavour. Additionally, magnum bottles are visually impressive and make for an impressive display at a dinner party or special occasion.
The 2016 Pinot Noir Block 8 has a medium ruby colour and a youthfully subdued nose of peppercorn, tobacco, dried tea leaves, bergamot, and bitter citrus peel over a red and black fruit core. Light to medium-bodied, it gives wonderful concentration and layers in the mouth—fruit, earth, and spice are all here—with very fine, grainy tannins and a very energetic, almost buzzing, long and layered finish. This will benefit from decanting. 466 cases were produced.
