Description

The berries for this 2016 Giribaldi Barolo Cerviano Merli Riserva Lagenwein come from a parcelI of the winery in the municipality of Novello. In the upper part of this plot there is the area of Cerviano, in the lower part the area of Merli.

Cerviano has the shape of an amphitheater and a sheltered position. Merli lies on an even ridge culminating in a rounded crest. This plot benefits from a southern exposure and is located at 320-450 meters above sea level.

The manual harvest takes place at the end of October and the subsequent fermentation takes place over a period of almost a month in stainless steel fermentation tanks. This is done at a constant temperature of 30ºC and when fermentation is complete, the wine is again left to rest in steel tanks for two months. Finally, the aging takes place in large oak barrels for more than 60 months. The wine is then stored in the bottle in underground cellars at a constant temperature of 16ºC before being sold.

The Barolo shows a maturing ruby red with a brick-colored rim in the glass. On the nose it is fruity and rather spicy with slightly spicy notes. Elegant, structured and dense on the palate. A tannic wine with good balance. depth and length. Has very good expansion potential. Recommended drinking window: 2022-2032

Review

Amongst an array of stellar vintages over the last decade and more, none surpass 2016 – it is already legendary. This vineyard is just four metres in distance from the Ravera. A deep red/ maroon, the nose offers strawberries and florals, notes of coffee grinds, truffles and cigar boxes, hints of bay leaves and roast meats. This is fresh, focused, supple, lingering and utterly delicious. Fabulously complex, this is a wonderful Barolo for enjoying over the next couple of decades. The team talk of it offering a “heart-shaped palate”. Appealing cherry notes emerge on that palate. There is already some development, of course, but plenty more to come. A stunning wine.

This wine offers upfront and vibrant aromas of dried cherries, warm strawberries dusted with clove, and dried roses. The palate is elegant with fine tannins, dried earth, savory herbs and crushed rocks.
