Description

2025 Halliday - Other Whites & Blends Wine of the Year

Embark on a journey with us as we unveil the inaugural vintage from the MMAD team, a season that can only be described as perfection itself. Picture a year blessed with mild ripening conditions that bestowed upon us Chenin Blanc grapes infused with vibrant acidity and an abundance of flavor.

Our meticulous process begins with hand-picking the finest fruit. Approximately one third of these grapes experience the gentle embrace of old French oak puncheons through whole bunch pressing, while the rest are expertly crushed for extended skin contact and fermented in concrete vats before joining their counterparts in the puncheons.

The resulting wine is a harmonious symphony, weaving finesse from the whole bunch pressed component with rich texture from the crushed fruit. It showcases a mesmerizing array of characteristics, including notes of citrus peel, cumquat, subtle hints of hessian, the invigorating essence of sea spray, and a delicate whisper of lanolin.

But that's not all; when you take your first sip, you'll discover a palate that stretches gracefully, framed by a backbone of crisp acidity. And here's the truly exciting part—this wine has an aging potential that promises to evolve and mature, becoming even more exquisite with time.

Don't miss your chance to experience the magic of this exceptional Chenin Blanc. Secure your bottles now and be part of an extraordinary journey that captures the essence of this unforgettable season. Indulge in a wine that is not just a sip but a story waiting to be told.

The second release of this wine sees more depth and texture, reflecting an evolution of making after winemaker Adam Wadewitz got the measure of grape and site – on Maslin sands over ironstone. There’s chew and race in equal measure, with tart golden apples, ripe Meyer lemon, cool stone fruit, sea spray and savoury elements of crushed fennel seed, white pepper and a waxy chalkiness. Integrated barrel/mlf notes round out flavour and feel, with an intriguing saline slip to the palate complementing the subtle grip and the pleasing rip of natural acid. It’s a superb wine, thrillingly refined and detailed. The upward trajectory of this project is one to watch very closely.

50% of the pickings were crushed and fermented to concrete and 50% was whole-bunch pressed and fermented in large-format seasoned oak. The Blewitt Springs vineyard was planted in 1939 and one does not often taste 80 year+ plus Chenin Blanc in Australia. As of 2022 the vineyard is solely in the management hands of the MMAD team. Flannel flowers, pomelo pith and pumice stone. White apple flesh, nectarine and lemon sorbet. It’s delicately floral with marine accents. Driftwood, salt spray and ozonic aromas. A white almond crunch with a briney salinity, the wine coils and stretches along the palate. The interplay of acidity, fine lacey phenolics and great length of flavour is becoming a trademark of style for this wine. Beautifully positioned for drinking with delicate raw seafood.

Hand-picked, half whole bunch-pressed to used French puncheons for fermentation, the balance crushed into concrete tulip-shaped vessels before maturation in used French puncheons. The blend of components give rise to textured, layered citrus peel flavours sewn together by a shaft of glistening acidity.

I would imagine that a great deal of cross studies, comparative tastings and with that, cross-pollination has occurred via South Africa. The use of oak, the mineral reductive torque and aromas of cheese cloth, yellow to green plum and gritty sandy finish, reminiscent. Yet this is beautifully saline, mid-weighed and distinctly maritime, as if sucking on desert sand while chewing wild fennel. Very Vale. Increasingly fine. I feel that the textural mandala can be expanded even further. A journey worth following.

Moret included this in her top-six wines of the day. “Boasting wattleseed, marshmallow, caramel, lemon juice and candlewax. Framed with oak but oak is not the main character. Flavours are crisp and crunchy, citrus, green apple, tangerine, mango and pastry notes. There’s an undercurrent of minerality that lends a savoury aspect to the palate, and well balanced phenolics serve as a structure for the flavour profile. A wine with great balance, made with care and purpose. Will age beautifully.”

Bright, light yellow hue with a nutty bouquet that reflects some barrel work, combined with creamy, waxy, pastry-like nuances. The wine is bright and intense in the mouth, restrained and quietly persuasive, with a bone-dry balance and refreshing qualities. There’s a lot to like here.
