Description

The Mongeard family arrived in Vosne-Romanée in the 18th century, and records show a Mongeard working as vigneron for Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in 1786. In 1945, Jean Mongeard, whose mother was a Mugneret, found himself making wine at the age of 16. His father had died five years before, and there was no one left to do the job. The entire 1945 crop was purchased by Baron le Roy, Marquis d'Angerville, and Henri Gouges. Gouges instructed the young Mongeard to personally bottle the wines, rather than sell them in barrel, because of the exceptional quality of the family's wines.

Les Avaux is a Beaune Premier Cru appellation in Burgundy. Pinot Noir reigns in the 13.8-hectare (34.1-acre) property, producing medium- to full-bodied wines with spicy flavours and good tannic structure.

Tasting Profile

Nose
The wines from “Les Avaux” are very deep and dark in colour. The bouquet is very varied and complex, with animal notes suggestive of leather and aromas of red and dark fruits, including red berries, blackcurrants, and morello cherries.
Palate
Both silky and dense, in the mouth the Beaune 1er Cru “Les Avaux” has great distinction and is very well balanced as well as warm and round. There are firm but not excessive tannins magnificently blended with savours of dark cherries with underlying meaty nuances.
