Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret is a Burgundy estate with a long history of making fine Pinot Noir wines in Vosne-Romanée. The Mongeard family dates its origins in the commune back to 1620. In the 1920s, the marriage of Eugène Mongeard to Edmée Mugneret brought together vineyards from both families, increasing the size of the Domaine.
In 1945, their son Jean began estate-bottling the wine for the first time and releasing it commercially under the name Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret. Jean had taken over the estate and at 16 was selling its grapes to esteemed producers such as Marquis d'Angerville and Henri Gouges. It was on Gouges' advice that Jean transitioned to bottling the wine himself.
The estate is now one of the larger properties and has 30 hectares (75 acres) of vines in over 30 different vineyards, with an average vine age of more than 40 years. Sourced from vineyards planted in stony soil with vines averaging 65 years of age, this Pinot Noir was both picked and sorted by hand with impeccable care. Aged in 5-10% new oak barrels.
A dense, brooding red, exhibiting black cherry, blackberry, plum, iron, and earth aromas and flavours. There is a beam of acidity, keeping this well-defined, with a solid spine of tannins. Spicy finish.
The ripe, fresh and moderately bright aromas consist of dark raspberry, newly turned earth, and a whisper of Sauvage character that is again trimmed in discreet wood. There is very good freshness and energy to the agreeably textured and delineated middle-weight flavours that exude a refreshing salinity on the youthfully austere and mildly rustic finale.
