Penley Estate was established when the owners bought a plot of land in Coonawarra and planted Cabernet grapes. In 1989, Pheonix Cabernet was awarded a Gold Medal at Adelaide Wine Show. The company's winery was built in 1995, leading to a plantation of more vineyards including Shiraz and Cabernet grapevines. Subsequently, the company expanded producing classic and full-bodied Coonawarra red wines, created to be stored and savoured.
Contemporary Coonawarra at its finest. Powerful yet restrained, the combination of dark fruits, savoury notes, and focused tannin results in a pure expression of cabernet sauvignon. A complex nose full of cassis, mulberry, violets, and licorice and supporting French Oak. The palate is bold, generous, and seductive, driven by a core of succulent fruit and savoury textural tannin providing superb length. This is a wine of incredible depth, complexity, and finesse.
A lovely vintage, excellent fruit, wild fermentation, some extended maceration but time not specified, aged 18 months in French barrels, 40% new. Despite the hefty 1.6kg bottle, this wine is anything but weighty. An excellent dark garnet hue, it's resplendent with pure cabernet aromas and flavours. A latent power and beauty at the same time, with exceptional tannins, long and finely chiselled.
