Description

Classic Cooinda Vale, elegant, poised and precise. Delightful aromas of cherry ripe and caraway precede soft raspberry jube and fennel on the palate, with orange citrus, grapefruit pith on the lingering finish.

Cooinda Vale Vineyard was established in 1985 by Pooley’s founders, Margaret and Dennis Pooley. Sitting between 80-100m above sea level, the vineyard is tucked away in a nook of hills North of Campania making it much more protected from prevailing weather conditions. Being more continental it also experiences greater extremes in temperatures bringing more frequent frosts, snow and heat waves. The iron lacking grey, brown sandy loam over clay subsoils at this site tend to bring a moderate level of struggle to the vines by restricting deep root growth and water accessibility but in turn creates a wine that is more delicate and finer.

Review
Sourced from the outstanding Cooinda Vale vineyard in Campania, Coal River Valley; 15% whole bunch, 11 months' maturation in French oak, 30% new. Bright ruby with aromas of red cherry, redcurrant and red plum cut with hints of fine spice, amaro, crushed rock, leaf litter, char siu, game meats, distant truffle and earth. The Pooley wines are so beautifully composed and calm. There is a real sense of grace on the palate, its travel long, true and balanced, its drinkability and elegance undisputed.

Review
Deep-ish red-purple, youthful and bright in the glass. Dark-fruited aromas of black cherry to plum, with an overlay of dried herbs. The wine is medium weighted and has plenty of presence, the flavours backed by ample chalky tannins and the finish quite long. This is a more serious pinot noir that could take some age to its advantage.
