Coonawarra Cabernet at its finest, showcasing the distinctive regional characteristics of fruit grown on terra Rossa soil over limestone. Structural with regional blackcurrant fruit and long fine tannins to ensure a long life ahead of it.
Sourced from two adjacent blocks on the Flint Vineyard in the northwest of the Coonawarra wine region. The vines were planted in 1989 and grow on the famed “terra Rossa” soil of the region, which in this northwest corner is slightly more fertile, resulting in wines of great power and opulence. A single parcel of fruit was chosen to make this wine. Optimal harvest decisions are crucial for St.Hugo Coonawarra Cabernet to highlight the varietal characteristics whilst still maintaining a powerful structure.
As Chief Winemaker Peter Munro pointed out “You can taste the dirt a bit more here”. Bright deep ruby in colour and opens with broad and muscular aromas – fruit pastilles, dried basil, baked earth, and toasty oak at the fore. It’s then dry and packs quite a punch of robust, dense, dark sweet fruits plus a firm backbone of mouthcoating tannins providing exceptional length and persistence. No doubt there is fantastic power and longevity to this wine but just lacks quite the finesse of the ‘Signature Collection’ Cabernet.
