Sydney Royal Wine Show Gilbert Phillips Memorial Perpetual Trophy for Best Red Wine. The Sutton Grange Estate Syrah is the purest expression of the property. 2018 was one of the great seasons we have experienced.
We had a series of favourable events that year – rainfall at the right times, and great flowering and ripening conditions. Coinciding with the 20th year of vines in the ground, 2018 was a lovely chance for us to enjoy the spoils of an established vineyard. The 2018 Estate wines celebrate a benchmark year.
Winning the Sydney equivalent of the Jimmy Watson Trophy! As well as the Dr. Gilbert Phillips Memorial Perpetual Trophy for Best Red Wine, we also took out the trophy for Best Shiraz and the trophy for Best Small Producer.
Hand-picked in small batches from the best sections of the vineyard, fermented separately, building a wine with 15% whole bunch, and 85% whole berry. Open-fermented, with an average of 9 days on skins, matured for 18 months in French oak (25% new). It's medium-bodied, but offers a multiplicity of flavours, texture, and structure; the fruit ripened a point, filling the mouth and very long palate.
