Tyrrell's is an iconic Hunter Valley winery renowned for producing some of Australia’s greatest wines. Headed up by fourth-generation family member Bruce Tyrrell, Tyrrell’s is home to some of Australia’s most awarded wines including the iconic Vat 1 Semillon. Since 1971, Tyrrell’s has been awarded over 5,000 trophies and medals and in 2010 was named “Winery of the Year” in James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion.
A classic Hunter Valley Semillon showing a tightly structured palate with considerable length and breadth of citrus fruit flavours. First produced in 1963 from Semillon grapes grown on a Short Flat vineyard, Vat 1 is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and then quietly spends a few years ‘resting’ in bottles. Released after 5 years of bottle age, Vat 1 is a classic example of aged Hunter Semillon. Arguably Australia’s finest Semillon, Vat 1 epitomises the benefits of patient bottle aging that transforms this unoaked wine into a masterpiece. Tyrrell’s Vat 1 was first produced in 1963 from Semillon grapes grown on the Short Flat Vineyard across the road from Tyrrell’s historic Pokolbin winery.
Classic young Hunter Semillon breeds steely, reticent wines with little to show but for notes of lemongrass and citrus. They demand at least five years of bottle age to reach adolescence which barely glimpses the potential of buttered toast, glazed quince, and lemon drop accents that come with middle age and beyond.
