Description

The Tyrrells Vat 9 Shiraz Magnum 1.5L 2019 is a top-tier Australian wine that comes from the oldest and best blocks of the Tyrrell Estate's 'Ashmans' vineyard. These vineyards feature soils that are ideal for growing super-premium Shiraz, and the majority of the blend is sourced from the Weinkeller and Short Flat vineyards. The 2019 vintage in the Hunter Valley was another high-quality year across all varieties, and the fruit was handpicked and sorted in the vineyard during the second week of February.

This wine is made from the highest quality grapes, fermented separately in open-top vats, and then matured in new and one-year-old 2700L French oak casks. The blend is then assembled and matured for a further five months before bottling. The result is a wine with a vibrant purple colour, an enticing nose of lifted spice, dark berry aromas, and a subtle hint of oak. The palate is medium-bodied, showing incredible intensity and a seamless structure, with wonderfully balanced fruit, acid, oak, and tannin.

The Tyrrells Vat 9 Shiraz Magnum comes in a magnum-sized bottle, which is a 1.5-litre bottle. Magnum bottles are larger than standard wine bottles and are known to be the best format for aging wines. They are often used for special occasions and celebrations and are popular among collectors because they can improve the wine's flavour and aroma over time. The larger size of the bottle also allows the wine to age more slowly and consistently, resulting in a more refined and complex flavour profile.

In summary, the Tyrrells Vat 9 Shiraz Magnum 1.5L 2019 is a premium Australian wine that is sourced from the oldest and best vineyards of the Tyrrell Estate. It is made from the highest quality grapes and is aged in French oak casks. The wine has a vibrant purple colour, an enticing nose, and a seamless structure. The magnum-sized bottle enhances the wine's aging potential, making it an excellent addition to any wine collection or special occasion.

"There’s so much to be said for not flooding Hunter Shiraz with small format oak. The best wines from this region don’t use it. And add to that, crazy acid additions. It’s very Vat 9. Boysenberry, vanilla, and floral perfume, classic smooth ride of ripe red fruits, slightly sticky tannin, medium-bodied at most, fresh and lively, yet still that regal carriage of richness, good length with a lick of tannin to close it out. So charming and effortless."

"A reversion to delicacy. A homage to a noble past of sappy, savoury Hunter Burgundy, as it was once known. With this, there has been an adoption of larger-format oak, less agitation, and with that, superior tannin management. The result is sappy, floral, detailed, and dangerously drinkable. Violet, dark cherry, clove, licorice straps, and a sachet of spice. Yet the texture is the totem. And it is sumptuous."

Tasting Profile

Nose
Sourced from numerous vineyards the oldest being from 1918; dark and plummy with spice on the front palate this then opens up with more sweet fruited berries, and lush blackcurrants again with spice but refreshed with precise acidity.
Palate
On the finish, it is silky and pure and lingers with a delicate, refined, perfumed feel. Bruce says that this is ‘Hunter Shiraz’ not ‘Aussie Shiraz’, with alcohol in general between 12.8% abv and 13.5% abv – he is looking for lovely sweet fruit, with fresh acidity with a lift from the oak, but predominately allows the grapes, soil, and land shine.
