Description

Urlar takes immense pride in being a family-owned enterprise. Their unwavering vision is to craft exceptional single-vineyard wines that authentically echo their unique origins. To uphold the utmost integrity to this mission, they've embraced a holistic approach, cultivating grapes and producing wine through a harmonious blend of organic and biodynamic principles. At the core of their philosophy lies "Urlar," a word inspired by Gaelic, signifying the very essence of the earth. It is the heart of our farming ethos, embodying their aspiration to rejuvenate these ancient soils, infusing them with renewed vitality. Their goal is simple yet profound: to present you with wines that capture the unadulterated purity of flavor that their land inherently offers.

Aromas of stonefruit and spice (nutmeg), ginger and honey with sweet pear dominate the nose. The wine has a honeyed and mouth filling entry from the malolactic influence. Satisfying richness is then reined in by a tangelo skin and ginger spiced texture from the skin contact parcel. It finishes dry and refreshing. Will cellar for several years, enjoy with rich food.

Review

Voluminous, ripe, complex, vinous nose with opulent aromas of warm buttered crumpets, desiccated botrytis, creamy malolactic with barrel influence and hints of honeysuckle and cinnamon. Dry, textural, tasty, and satisfying with plenty of weight and a creamy mid-palate texture. A delicious, fully mature, 'grown-up' style of Gris showing a deftness of barrel handling seldom seen in NZ.
