Founded in 2000 by Daniel Vollenweider from Graubünden, with little more than a hectare of grapes in the Wolfer Goldgrube area and sheer enthusiasm making up for capital. Daniel Vollenweider and Moritz Hoffmann have headed the winery jointly since 2020.
(Daniel Vollenweider sadly passed away in July 2022 he has left the future winemaking in the safe hands of Moritz Hoffmann and a legacy of beautiful wines to enjoy)
The Goldgrube is a steep amphitheatre rising above a bend in the Mosel river, south to southwest-facing, with predominately Devonian grey slate (certain parcels variegated with iron-rich red slate). Old vines here are ungrafted and some are over 80 years of age. The estate is 100% Riesling and 100% steep, slate sites. Everything must be done by hand in the vineyard.
The mostly unconsolidated parcels are spread across six hectares
on the steep Moselle slopes, their generally very old, ungrafted Riesling vines
provide us with dry, sweet, and noble sweet wines belonging among the top of
the region‘s produce, impressively demonstrating the potential of the slopes
around the traditional wine-trading city Traben-Trarbach.
We aim for distinct wines which nevertheless show the influences of terroir and vintage. respect for the interconnections of nature with acceptance and understanding of the effects of external factors on the vines is the basis of our work.
Slightly funky from the wild ferment. This is a very elegant, filigree, and mineral dry Riesling with aromas ranging from delicate floras to white peaches and passion fruit. The long finish is super clean and subtle. Better from 2019 and long-term aging potential.
