The Carrodus Range of wines was established in honour of Yarra Yering's founder, Dr Bailey Balfour Carrodus. A visionary and Renaissance man who led the renewal of the Yarra Valley vine plantings in the late 1960s.
We aim to honour his enduring legacy with very limited bottlings that highlight specific and finite areas of his beloved Yarra Yering vineyard. Wines that best capture the essence of his vision and the greatest expression of this vineyard’s unique place in the world. Tiny yields, this fruit is hand-harvested lovingly by only Yarra Yering staff, into the cool room overnight and then the whole bunch is pressed. Any juice not pressed from the skins is then frozen to be used in the Dry Red Wine No. 2 ferment weeks later. The Viognier juice is run off to oak barrels without any clarification for primary fermentation. Largely left alone until bottling after 10 months. Only two barrels are produced.
This Viognier is sourced from some of the oldest Viognier vines in the country, planted in 1982. There are three blocks across the vineyard with varying ages.
Signature apricot blossom lifted white flowers of honeysuckle and a little musk stick aroma. Fresh apricots deliver oodles of weight and flavour with a white nectarine punch, and hints of lemon citrus bring an acid twist to drive the back palate and keep the weight in check. A chalky texture and some oak tannin from barrel maturation carry the flavour to a long lingering finish.
