Yarra Yering Underhill Shiraz 2019
Established in 1969 by Dr. Bailey Carrodus, on what is arguably the finest vineyard in the region, there’s not a cellar or wine-taster in Australia who hasn’t fallen under the spell of a Yarra Yering wine. From the Bordeaux-inspired Dry Red No. 1, mid-weighted, and a godsend in our land of the over-bearing and overwrought, through to the spine-tingling Rhone-like No. 2, the Yarra Yering wines have near-perfect precision, detailed fruit, tissue-thin tannins, and prodigious length. Carrodus was a genius, inspired by the great wines of Europe and beyond, his fastidious and knowledgeable ways set the path for many of our greatest young winemakers to come. Yarra Yering was always the next-tier; the wine that we all want to make, if we had the talent, but know, we can never achieve. Despite the sad passing of Bailey Carrodus in 2008, the legacy of Yarra Yering has rarely diminished. Now stewarded by Sarah Crowe, whose custodianship originally came with great expectation and responsibility, the Yarra Yering name is burning ever brighter. In 2017 Sarah Crowe was named the James Halliday Winemaker of the Year, releasing a suite of wines with an enviable score of 99 points. Then followed another year and another array of star-studded reviews from the usual critics. Sarah’s time had come, and the legendary, tight allocations of Yarra Yering were becoming ever harder to muster.
A single block of Shiraz planted in 1973; 8 acres at the western extremity of the Yarra Yering vineyard.
One of the Yarra Yering wines to give itself up sooner rather than later will often look wonderful at 5-10 years of age. This vineyard has a proven pedigree and it will continue to evolve for many more years under suitable cellaring conditions should you want to leave it for 10+ years.

Totally opaque black-dark purple colour with a bright dark purple hue. Perfumed-like aromatics of red plum, blueberry, violets, and red licorice blossom from the glass followed by subtle incense-like notes, fresh herbs, faint vanillin cedar, and pepper.
Mid-weight and refined yet juicy the palate features a mix of delicious red and blue fruits that include red plum, blueberry, and licorice. A velvety mouthfeel complimented by a cool climate freshness with some delicate earthy incense, light vanillin clove, and spicy pepper characters in the background. Perfectly integrated tannins show great polish with a long finessed aftertaste.
