A classic blend of Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz each variety located in three distinct sub-districts of McLaren Vale. The Grenache is from the Seaview Vineyard on Olivers Road, the Mataro from the Oliveto Vineyard located in the Sellicks foothills and Shiraz from the Wait Family Vineyard on the top of the Seaview Rise. Managed sustainably, each vineyard is low yielding and hand manicured.
Handpicked, sorted and destemmed with 15% whole bunch clusters retained.
Each of the 3 varieties were fermented separately in open-topped fermenters, whereby the fruit was cold soaked for 5 days before being allowed to naturally warm to begin fermentation.
Pressing occurred after a long fermentation period of near 20 days into a series of seasoned French oak barrels. After 6 months maturation the wine was blended, naturally clarified and bottled without finings or filtration.
I recall this cuvee being a bit rough around the edges. Not anymore. Brimming with personality, varietal fealty and a sense of hands that care, this is a rich wine not lacking in tannins, warmth or freshness. Ironstone, blood plums, violets, herbs and Chinese medicine cabinet whiffs are directed broadly across the mouth by a raft of well-managed tannins. Excellent drinking at this price. Drink or hold. Screw cap.
