Living Soils, Vibrant wines. At the dawn of the third millennium, the Domaine de la Vougeraie was born. Family-friendly, small and large at the same time, between Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. The Domaine de La Vougeraie starts in the vineyard, continues in the cellar, and long after, in the pleasure of tasting. Like us, our wines are whole, deep and cheerful, direct but complex, in a word, true.
Sylvie Poillot, General Manager, farms the estate’s 42 hectares biodynamically. “We do this to preserve the fertility of soils, and to have a very good balance between the soil and the plant’s health,” she explains. It’s not just the soil health that’s changed: two decades on from their conversion to biodynamics, the wines are evolving too: “The wines are more aromatic and more expressive year after year,” she says. This is an excellent introduction to a modern house tending to an ancient varietal in pursuit of timeless quality. This blends fruit from the Hautes Côtes de Beaune with fruit from young vines in Vougeot, Gevrey-Evocelles, Volnay and Nuits-Clos de Thorey. These are all assembled to give a pretty, very courteous wine.
An appealingly fresh nose speaks of various red berries and earth whereas the latter is also reflected by the nicely rich and rounded flavours that possess an easy-to-like texture on the acidulated Bon bons finish. This isn't particularly complex but I like the refreshing style.
It has a pretty bouquet of red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit. The palate is taut on the entry, fresh and tart with a tang of orange rind mixing with the ferrous red fruit on the finish.
