In the mid-20th century, the Pinot-Gris grape variety was a rare gem in Alsace, often demanding some of the highest prices for wines in the region. These vintage cultivars bore small clusters and yielded modest quantities, prompting growers to reserve them for esteemed vineyards and premium pricing. However, with the introduction of modern clones, Pinot-Gris proliferated across the region, though not always to its advantage.
Fortunately, our domaine possessed venerable vines, providing a unique opportunity to select and reproduce these heritage varieties. The early ripening nature of Pinot-Gris, coupled with the precocious gravelly valley floor of Turckheim, presented a delightful challenge. Managing the harvest date became increasingly intricate, necessitating daily assessments to ensure optimal ripeness without crossing the threshold.
In the vintage of 2019, the wine underwent a swift and bone-dry fermentation process, culminating in bottling just before the 2020 harvest. This meticulous approach preserves the essence of our Pinot-Gris heritage, a testament to the careful balance struck between tradition and innovation in winemaking.
