This new rose from Caruso & Minini is one of our new discoveries at this year's Vinitaly. Frappo, the name stands for the Sicilian grape variety Frappato from which it is made. The flamingo is the symbol of the nearby Stagnone nature reserve. Soft pink, fresh and fruity, with notes of strawberries, cherries and lavender.
The Frappo is the perfect accompaniment to Mediterranean dishes and for sociable summer evenings.
Behind a restored baglio, as the old walled courtyards are called in Sicily, there is an ultra-modern winery hidden. Stefano Caruso had long had the dream of bottling a wine under his own name. He didn't lack ideas on how these wines should be made, but he did lack money to build a modern winery, a basic requirement for the wines that the young, committed Stefano had in mind. He looked for a partner and finally found him in Mario Minini, owner of a wine trading house in Brescia.
Minini was convinced of the qualities of the wines and the locations and invested in building a new winery. Since then, things have been steadily improving, some of the vineyards have been replanted, always in search of the perfect combination of soil, grape variety and orientation. The Caruso family's many years of experience were an invaluable advantage. An all-round successful joint venture, now Stefano Caruso can show what kind of wines his sites between Salemi and Marsala can produce.
