Since 1814, the Moreau family has been an integral part of Chablis. Jean Joseph Moreau founded the wine-merchant firm back then. In 1974, Hiram Walker acquired 50% and later, in 1985, the whole company. Eventually, J. Moreau et Fils was sold to Boisset in Nuits-Saint-Georges. Throughout these shifts, the Moreau family retained their vineyard ownership. By 2002, Christian Moreau Père & Fils reclaimed the right to produce and market wines under their name from their extensive vineyards.
Today, Fabien Moreau, the sixth generation, stands as the exceptional winemaker at this Chablis Domaine. With an average vine age of 45 years, handpicking is paramount from Chablis to Grands Crus. Premier Crus and Grands Crus undergo 30-45% wood barrel vinification; others ferment in stainless steel vats. The Moreau family's approach is dedicated to honoring the terroir's excellence, bringing out the best in every harvest.
From vines average age over 40 years old. Half of the holding of the estate has been re-planted in recent years so quantities of this wine are reduced recently.
The one-hectare parcel that constitutes the 2021 Chablis Valmur Grand Cru yielded five barrels this year. This also has a heavy reduction and is quite yeasty at the moment. The palate is well balanced with a marine-influenced entry flecks of white chocolate complementing the citrus fruit with a longer finish than the Blanchot. Fine sour lemon mixed with orange rind on the aftertaste. Excellent.
