Renowned as one of the foremost white wine producers globally, Domaine Leflaive requires no extensive introduction. While Burgundy wines, particularly those from the coveted Cotes de Beaune, have become exorbitantly expensive, Leflaive's offerings are increasingly elusive, catering mainly to the fortunate elite. Initiatives by Burgundian luminaries Dominique Lafon and the late Anne-Claude Leflaive in the early 2000s strategically secured prime vineyard parcels, ensuring accessibility and affordability initially.
However, escalating demand and shrinking supplies now challenge this intent. The 2020 releases, notably remarkable, exhibit the signature Leflaive traits—tension, power, and minerality. Despite limited reviews due to pandemic disruptions, personal evaluations attest to the exceptional quality, distinguishing them even among prestigious counterparts. Notably, these wines maintain their approachability in youth, showcasing a unique balance of ripeness, freshness, and depth characteristic of Macon terroir. With only a limited quantity available, these wines stand out as a noteworthy and comparatively economical choice for enthusiasts of Chardonnay, white Burgundy, and the iconic Domaine Leflaive.
Made from 10 plots covering 13 ha, vinified and aged in a mix of stainless steel, concrete, demi-muids and foudres for one year, then all is blended in tank before bottling in January. A fairly full yellow in colour with some sunshine alongside the definite reductive character. The bouquet grows in richness, with ripe apple notes. A juicy quality of fruit, even a little bit buttery, salted butter for sure.
