Pingus is an icon of Spanish winemaking, producing some of the most sought-after bottles in the country, if not the world.
Pingus is Danish winemaker Peter Sisseck's Tempranillo project in north-central Spain - Pingus was Sisseck's childhood nickname.
From humble beginnings to today's small but modern winery in Ribera del Duero, Pete's focus has been on making Spain's greatest red wine, from 'restored' old Tempranillo vines. In recent years oak usage has been pulled back, aiming for a more refined expression.
The fruit for Pingus comes from two walled vineyards, or clos, not far from each other - Barroso and San Cristobal, with very different soil types - more gravel in Barroso, more clay in San Cristobal.
2019 was a powerful 'solar' year so look for supremely ripe black cherry and blackberry flavours, along with a line of fine chalk tannins.
Ripe berry, black cherry, black mushroom, and violet aromas. Some stone and dry-earth undertones. Full-bodied and very long with an extremely fine, silky texture and a finish that goes on for minutes. The depth and texture of this wine are truly breathtaking. Another world-class Pingus. Try after 2025, when the tannins will have softened and the wine will be opening up.
