Domaine Dugat-Py, along with only DRC, Roumier, Rousseau, and Leroy, is rated in the top Three Star category by the 'Classement' published by the Revue du Vin de France. These are the essence of robust Burgundy, wines of huge scale and concentration. Patience is required, so lay down a few grand bottles for your dotage.
10 barrels.
Always the richest and most muscular of Dugat-Py's communal bottlings, the 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Coeur du Roy unwinds in the glass with aromas of raspberries, plums, forest floor, spices, and grilled meats. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, and layered, with a broad-shouldered chassis of fine, powdery tannins and lively acids, it's long and penetrating. As usual, it derives from vines between 50 and 109 years of age located in the lieux-dits Epointures, Combe du Dessus, Jouise, and Les Marchais, and it was vinified with 60% whole cluster and raised in 50% new oak. Having visited the Domaine's vines before harvest, I can attest that its deep, saturated hue comes from an abundance of tiny, shot berries with a high skins-to-juice ratio, rather than from any desire to push extraction in the winery.
