Unfurling in the glass with a deep bouquet of peonies, wild berries, cherries and loamy soil, the 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Coeur du Roy is full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, endowed with real texture and mid-palate amplitude. Muscular and concentrated, it's beautifully complete, with lively acids and refined if abundant tannins. From barrel, I suggested that readers might think of this particular rendition of Dugat-Py's emblematic communal Gevrey as a baby Charmes-Chambertin, and that contention holds up in bottle.
