Description

Henschke is a critically well-regarded wine estate based in the Eden Valley town of Keyneton, South Australia. The winery produces a range of wines from the Eden Valley and surrounding subregions, including Barossa and Adelaide Hills. Henschke is best known for its intense, full-bodied flagship wine, Hill of Grace, made from Shiraz vines up to 150 years old. It is one of the most expensive – and sought-after – wines to be made in Australia.

Founded in 1862 by Silesian immigrants, Henschke is one of the oldest wine producers in Australia and remains under the ownership of the family. Winemaker Stephen Henschke, educated at the Geisenheim Institute in Germany, and his viticulturist wife Prue are generally considered to be among the leading wine authorities in the country.

Keyneton Euphonium is a beautiful composition of shiraz from up to 50-year-old vines growing in the Eden and Barossa Valleys, blended with cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, and merlot from selected vineyards in both regions. The Barossa hills village of Keyneton, pioneered by pastoralist Joseph Keynes in 1842, was a musical and cultural focus for the community, and home to the Henschke Family Brass Band and Henschke Winery

Review

Detail is a wonderful thing. If you stick your nose in the glass and close your eyes, perhaps tilt your head just so, you can pick out the individual components of this wine, yet they mesh together perfectly. Juicy berry and plum fruits, abundant spice, fine-grind tannin grip, a fine lacy acid line, and an elegant, perfectly poised, slow fade out of pure fruit.

Tasting Profile

Nose
Deep crimson with vibrant ruby hues. Lifted aromas of ripe blackberry, blackcurrant, cassis, Satsuma plum, blueberry, anise, and violets with hints of black pepper and cedar.
Palate
Rich and concentrated flavours of dark plum, blackberry, and blackcurrant, with a pure, plush, and focused mid-palate, bright, balanced acidity, and excellent length, carried by fine-grained, ripe tannins. One of the all-time great vintages of this wine.
