‘il regalo di compleanno’ - The Birthday Present
The Story: What does one buy for a husband of almost twenty years who buys for himself whatever he wants! A great Nebbiolo rivals Pinot Noir in its elusiveness and Ray loves nothing more than a challenge. Two tonnes of Nebbiolo, difficult to wrap, but has given Ray many hours of fun, an excuse to spend a fortune on Barolo and will provide much pleasure for years to come. It has continued to work ever since. And as our experience grows, the vines age, and the solera of ‘other vintages’ continues to be built upon we are seeing a stunning legacy emerging…
The Wine: The seventh release of our Nebbiolo sourced from the wonderful Malakoff vineyard in the Pyrenees, South of Landsborough. Planted in 2000, we have been working with Robert & Cameron John for over a decade to get the absolute best from this vineyard, year on year. The style has continued to develop over the years towards greater complexity and elegance. Open top fermented with a “modest” 33 days on skins post ferment. The wine is savoury with autumnal flavours, dried herbs, white mushrooms, dried rose petals and deliciously firm tannins. Save it for a few years or drink with Osso Bucco!
The statement ‘Malakoff Vineyard, Pyrenees' provides a little more information. Hand-picked, destemmed, 27 days on skins, wild-fermented, matured for 15 months in a 2500l foudre. Very good colour for Nebbiolo; the tannin level is expectedly dry, but not lethally so. Good for nebbiolo nerds.
