The old vines of Blewitt Springs are a precious resource, and an important part of Australia’s viticultural history. In early 2021, MMAD Vineyard was purchased by a quartet made up of winemakers Martin Shaw and Adam Wadewitz, and Masters of Wine Michael Hill Smith and David LeMire. MMAD takes its name from their first initials. The MMAD wines aim to reflect the unique terroir of Blewitt Springs and the rare old vines that thrive there. MMAD Vineyard has Grenache that was all planted in 1939, as well as Shiraz and Chenin Blanc, the oldest of which were planted in 1941 and 1964 respectively. Australian Red WineThe philosophy in the vineyard is to continuously improve soil and vine health, and to promote diversity of plants, insects, and the microbiome.
All four grape varieties on the vineyard (Grenache, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chenin Blanc) were handpicked for this ‘field blend’ rosé.
A marriage of Grenache, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chenin Blanc makes up this Flamingo pink hue. Pink peppercorn, blood plum and persimmon, the wine is also heavily spiced with sumac, sweet paprika and orange bitters. Pickled watermelon, prosciutto and sour cherry. This is a savoury and spiced number with layers of complexities. Probably more akin to a light shaded red wine in its structural and flavour profile. A serious Rosé with the ability to be totally delicious and smashable at the same time. Drink with a peppery rocket salad with figs and goat’s cheese.
