With Monforte's assertive tannins, this wine bestows an intriguingly provocative texture on the palate, and for those familiar with Sordo's Perno, it's evident where this journey will ultimately lead. Grab a bottle from our museum collection, whether a 2015, 2010 Riserva, 2008, 2004, or 2001, and you'll witness the wine's evolution firsthand!
While it may be tightly wound at the moment, grant it five more years, and you'll find yourself in a blissful vinous realm. The 2010 Perno Riserva and 2008 Gabutti Riserva were the inaugural Sordo Barolos that ignited my passion, and the 2019 edition echoes the same dark, enigmatic character, boasting a remarkably complete palate and a profound core of fruit. It is already expressive, yet it tantalizing hints at delivering so much more with a little extra time in the bottle.
From a much-loved vineyard in the Monforte d’Alba district, there’s a gently convincing nature to this wine that first suggests oak but then persuades your nose that it is more about dark rose, crumbled earth and dusty minerals in play with anise and black fruits. Palate integration is supremely stylish, acidity and tannins seen but not heard. Everything you would expect in a complete Barolo package.
