Nestled within the revered HVD estate lies the Old Vines Chardonnay block, a storied parcel of land where Chardonnay vines have stood rooted in the earth since 1908, proudly holding the distinguished title of the world's oldest Chardonnay vineyard still yielding fruit of unparalleled quality.
Situated alongside Moore’s Creek, approximately 3.5 kilometers north of the Tyrrell’s winery, the historic HVD vineyard traces its origins back to 1908 when it was initially planted by the Hunter Valley Distillery Company. Established during a period of high demand for spirits and fortified wines, the vineyard served as a vital source of grapes for distillation. In 1933, Penfolds took over the lease, eventually acquiring the vineyard in 1948. Renowned vintner Murray Tyrrell regarded it as one of the Hunter Valley's premier white wine vineyards, and its acquisition by Tyrrell’s in 1982/83 marked a significant milestone for the estate.
Perched at an elevation of approximately 85 meters, the vineyard's alluvial sandy clay loam soil nurtures a diverse mix of Semillon (4.29 hectares) and Chardonnay (1.1 hectares) vines, with the latter comprising the oldest block of Chardonnay in existence. This historic plot serves as the exclusive source of grapes for our acclaimed HVD Chardonnay and HVD Semillon, testament to its enduring legacy and unrivaled contribution to our winemaking heritage.
