Description

Tignanello was the first Sangiovese to be aged in barriques, the first contemporary red wine blended with untraditional varieties (specifically Cabernet) and one of the first red wines in the Chianti Classico region that didn’t use white grapes. Tignanello is a milestone. It’s produced with a selection of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

The Tenuta Tignanello estate is in the heart of Chianti Classico, in the gently rolling hillsides between the Greve and Pesa river valleys. It extends over an area of 319 hectares (788 acres), of which about 130 (321 acres) are dedicated to vines. Two of the estate’s prized vineyards are on the same hillside, Tignanello and Solaia, on soils that originated from marine marlstone from the Pliocene period rich in limestone and schist. The vines enjoy hot temperatures during the day and cooler evenings throughout the growing season. The estate’s two signature wines, Solaia and Tignanello, are produced from these vineyards and have been defined by the international press as “among the most influential wines in the history of Italian viticulture”. According to Marchesi Antinori, Solaia and Tignanello are an ongoing challenge and a never-ending passion. The Tignanello estate has vineyards of indigenous Sangiovese grapes as well as some other untraditional varieties such as Cabernet Franc.

Once again, the 2015 Tignanello stands as a masterpiece. Its enchanting bouquet is adorned with sweet, floral notes that impart a striking aromatic intensity, beautifully complementing the core of vibrant red Sangiovese fruit. Noteworthy in this vintage is the elevated presence of Sangiovese, subtly shaping the wine's distinctive flavor profile.

Though the tannins currently possess a bit of bite, this is a transient stage that will gracefully evolve with time, posing no lasting concern. The palate is a harmonious interplay of bright red cherry, plum, invigorating blood orange, refreshing mint, and alluring sweet floral nuances. These elements converge into a finish characterized by energy and tension, leaving no doubt that the 2015 vintage is nothing short of utterly captivating. In every essence, it transcends the ordinary, standing as a testament to its exceptional quality."

This bottle is the standard 750ml. If you are looking for the Magnum 1.5L bottle, you can find it here.

The 2015 Tignanello is stunning. Sweet, floral notes give the 2015 striking aromatic intensity to play off a core of red Sangiovese fruit. In 2015, the Sangiovese is a bit higher than the norm, which comes through in the wine's flavour profile. The tannins are also a bit biting at this stage, but that won't be an issue in time. Bright red cherry, plum, blood orange mint and sweet floral notes build into a finish laced with energy and tension. The 2015 is utterly captivating. That's all there is to it.

Fantastic aromas of dark berries, sandalwood and Spanish cedar that are ever so deep. Full body, an incredible spin of polished tannins and bright acidity. Incredible depth. Like looking over the edge of a skyscraper. Powerful and structured. A great Tignanello. A little more Sangiovese than usual. Best since the legendary 1997?
