Ballot Millot’s roots in Burgundy are seriously deep: they began amassing vineyards back in the 17th century. The Domaine has been one to watch ever since Charles Ballot took over in 2001. When Ballot took over, he began reducing yields, improving farming practices, and updating equipment. The level of quality rose dramatically.
Stylistically, Ballot Millot falls between the reductive style of Coche and Roulot and the voluptuous, oily style of old-school Meursault producers. Ballot’s wines have undeniable energy and detail, without sacrificing richness.
Charmes, often written as Les Charmes, is one of Meursault's largest and best-known Premier Cru vineyards. Found on the lower slope of the Cote d'Or at the southern end of the village, it is one of a cluster of top climats with Genevrieres on the northern border and Perrieres above it on the slopes. Charmes Premier Cru wines, made entirely from Chardonnay, are vibrant and honeyed with rich, nutty characters and floral overtones.
A very pretty and ultra-fresh nose consists of various white orchard fruit and plenty of citrus and spice nuances. There are equally good freshness and excellent tension to the slightly richer if not quite as refined flavours that possess a caressing mid-palate mouthfeel before culminating in a lengthy, delicious, and attractively clean finale. This is also lovely though it too needs to add depth.
